Determination of Seabird Density using Marine Radar
نویسندگان
چکیده
The upper coast of Texas has potential for onshore and offshore wind farm installations. Seabirds are important apex predators of estuarine and nearshore marine ecosystems and may be impacted by electricity-generating wind turbines. The area also is a crossroads for trans-Gulf and circum-Gulf of Mexico migrating land birds. Determination of avian density on land is facilitated by laser rangefinders but these instruments are nearly useless over water because water absorbs, rather than reflects, laser beams. Visual counts are limited to daylight hours but many birds migrate at night. Commercial grade marine radars are capable of detecting birds during diurnal and nocturnal hours. The purposes of this study , funded by the State Energy Conservation Office of Texas, were to: (1) determine the efficacy of marine radar for observing coastal birds, (2) quantify the density of coastal birds along the upper Texas coast, and (3) predict the potential for avian mortality due to the presence of wind turbines.

Mapping Seabird Sensitivity to Offshore Wind Farms
We present a Geographic Information System (GIS) tool, SeaMaST (Seabird Mapping and Sensitivity Tool), to provide evidence on the use of sea areas by seabirds and inshore waterbirds in English territorial waters, mapping their relative sensitivity to offshore wind farms. SeaMaST is a freely available evidence source for use by all connected to the offshore wind industry and will assist statutor...
متن کاملEmploying Predictive Spatial Models to Inform Conservation Planning for Seabirds in the Labrador Sea
Seabirds are vulnerable to incidental harm from human activities in the ocean, and knowledge of their seasonal distribution is required to assess risk and effectively inform marine conservation planning. Significant hydrocarbon discoveries and exploration licenses in the Labrador Sea underscore the need for quantitative information on seabird seasonal distribution and abundance, as this region ...

Modified marine surveillance radar was used to study the presence/ absence, abundance, and flight activity of four nocturnal species: Hawaiian darkrumped petrel [Pterodroma phaeopygia sandwichensis (Ridgeway)], Newell's shearwater [Puffinus auricularis newelli (Henshaw)], Band-rumped storm-petrel [Oceanodroma castro (Harcourt)), and Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus Sanborn & Crespo...
متن کاملAdaptive Thresholding in Marine RADARs
In order to detect targets upon sea surface or near it, marine radars should be capable of distinguishing signals of target reflections from the sea clutter. Our proposed method in this paper relates to detection of dissimilar marine targets in an inhomogeneous environment with clutter and non-stationary noises, and is based on adaptive thresholding determination methods. The variance and t...
متن کاملEstimation of Coast-Wide Population Trends of Marbled Murrelets in Canada Using a Bayesian Hierarchical Model
Species at risk with secretive breeding behaviours, low densities, and wide geographic range pose a significant challenge to conservation actions because population trends are difficult to detect. Such is the case with the Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus), a seabird listed as 'Threatened' by the Species at Risk Act in Canada largely due to the loss of its old growth forest nesting ha...
